Global flooding is a major concern in the era of climate change, shaking regions and affecting millions of lives. Based on the latest reports, the frequency and intensity of flooding is increasing, causing major losses both in terms of the economy and the environment. Data shows that rising global temperatures are causing melting of polar ice and extreme rainfall, thereby inundating areas that were previously safe from flooding. Referring to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report, coastal areas and lowland areas, such as Bangladesh and Indonesia, are the most vulnerable. Both urban infrastructure and rural communities will face higher risks. Adaptation projects, such as building embankments and more efficient drainage systems, are a priority to deal with worst-case scenarios. The impact of this flood is not only physical. In the context of health, the emergence of water-borne diseases is a serious threat. Floods provide opportunities for pathogens and disease vectors to reproduce, such as the cholera outbreak following major floods in Yemen in 2016. The affordability of access to adequate sanitation is also affected, making the distribution of clean water more difficult. The impact on the economy is also very large. The agricultural sector, which depends on stable climate patterns, lost crops due to flooding. Investment in environmentally friendly technologies, such as renewable and climate-friendly energy, must be the main focus in mitigating the impacts of flooding. Overall, global flooding caused by climate change has far-reaching impacts that cannot be ignored. With awareness and collective action, we hope to minimize the impact of flooding in the future.
