Stock Market Update: Earnings, Tariffs, and More

The financial markets are facing one of the most significant challenges in decades. The S&P 500 has soared to all-time highs, but there is much uncertainty ahead, including the impact of tariffs and a slowing economy.

Investors also remain nervous about the potential for a recession. The stock market hasn’t experienced a severe decline since the Great Recession of 2007-2009, which brought down many major banks and precipitated a collapse in housing and lending markets.

On the earnings front, expectations are for a slowing in growth for second-quarter profits and wide sector divergences. However, next week’s big bank earnings could set the tone for the season.

The market closed at a new record high last week as the S&P 500 gained 0.5%, just a stone’s throw from an all-time high, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (IXIC) added nearly 1%. A combination of positive earnings and trade news helped equities grind higher.
